Fathers Day; reflections on family roots from a daughter

I can hardly fathom that the third weekend in June, reserved for celebrating men in their role of fatherhood and fatherlike figures for many worldwide, came upon us again. The summer wheels of life seem to be moving fast as the summer solstice is soon approaching.

I’m grateful that in the household I grew up in, when I wasn’t getting into teenage mischief (yes, I had my share of that), I often sought advice from my dad.

With every lesson, there was a positive and negative force, just or unjust behavior, that required decisions. The value I gravitated towards is that we have a choice to live in harmony regardless of our differences.

My son the other day said I’m similar to my brother and perhaps also to my sister because we each, though quite different from one another, have the gift of gab. I then put two and two together and thought of how my dad loves to chat with everyone, from the people in the bagel shop and his favorite restaurants to when he is at work. He has a happy-go-lucky personality, and until Benjamin mentioned it, I thought I pulled my chattiness out of thin air (lol).

Then there are those less-than-positive traits.

Some characteristics may not be all we hoped, dreamed, or wanted our fatherly figures to stand for. We might only want to acquire knowledge from our parents if they’re righteous and kind, but their guidance from the day we children are born is passed onto us from their life experiences.

From there, as we age into adulthood, we can break through with our own identity despite what we did or did not learn from our parents, and in this reframe for the benefit of this impending day where you and I came from, one soundbite im sure of is:

You can never change anyone else’s mind. It’s up to you to create or regenerate new stories if specific ones need an upgrade.

When you set out to contribute to the world, it’s not only your life that’s affected.

Your decisions affect the next generation. You get to choose, be brave, and choose again regardless of the cards you were dealt because your mental and physical health depends on your self-care.

Plus, we get different qualities from other angles.

With men, we have women, and vice-versa.

So, what might you do this week, month, or year to become the most outstanding director of your life?

When you shower the next generation in a fashion that favors living by example, you gather strength and courage to thank all the fathers for doing their best under how they were raised.

When we steady ourselves on our breath for the sake of the sun, moon, and earth, we can use our fiery abundance of energy to be bewildered by the water flow!

Rebirthing ourselves today and every day in the face of adversity by awakening the traveler within, forgiving others, and asking for forgiveness is the most significant offering I ask of myself daily.

I hope your weekend and week ahead are peaceful, reflective matrices full of new and distant stand-out memories that welcome and beautify your guardian angel’s guidance for peace, love, and happiness.

May your father, children’s father, grandfathers, and past and future generations hear your call for compassion.
